Legends of Brittany

7 days / 6 nights | Total distance : 535 miles | Average daily distance : 112 miles

Start city : Saint-Malo | Ending city : Vannes

Brittany, or Armor, to use the old Celtic name, seems remote and a little out of the way, and until quite recently, it really was. Maybe that explains why it is associated with legends and folk tales. However, a trip to Brittany is a very rewarding experience and allows a traveler to see a unique part of the world : The Mont Saint Michel, a self-contained fortress, where the tide waters come in as fast as a galloping horse, to form a natural moat, the old medieval town of Saint Malo and its piratical past, Dinard, Saint Brieuc. You'll discover the unspoiled beauty of its bays and creeks around Cap Frehel and Quiberon, the estuary of Morlaix, the magnificent Belle Île en Mer, the megaliths of Carnac and the town of Vannes with its typical half-timbered houses...

The Alps: urban thrills and majestuous mountains

7 days / 6 nights | Total distance : 250 miles | Average daily distance : 50 miles

Start city : Lyon | Ending city : Annecy

Here is a region of France where you can have the thrills of the city and the joys of the mountain. You could start your journey with Lyon, the second largest city in France, built between two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône. Follow the traces of its history all the way back to ancient Rome, visit the traboules, the intricate networks of houses and communicating courtyards downtown. Make sure you eat in a “bouchon”, one of the typical small restaurants in the old neighborhoods. Then take the train to Grenoble, which is the gateway to the Chartreuse range, where you must try the eponymous liqueur. The scenery gets more spectacular as you rise in altitude. Visit the beautiful mountain towns of Annecy, Mégève and Chamonix and put on a pair of hiking boots or take the panoramic train of Montenvert and the cableway to the Aiguille du Midi. There, you will admire the Mont Blanc (4807m) and the Vallée Blanche. Whether you're a city walker or a mountain hiker, don't miss this one.
